FRÉJUS, COTE VAROISE
Discover the Pompeii Provençale at the entrance to the Estérel massif. We recommend a few tours that will help you jump back in time :
- Roman amphitheatre
Built at the end of the 1st century AD, outside the rampart and to the west of the city, the Arènes de Fréjus could accommodate nearly 10,000 spectators during gladiatorial fights and the hunting of wild beasts brought from Africa. Its dimensions were 113 metres in length and 85 metres in width. The building was classified as a Historic Monument in 1840. Today, the Amphitheatre comes back to life every summer with large concerts, a dance floor and shows being part of a rich and diverse cultural programme.
- The roman aqueduct
This 26,000-metre long Roman aqueduct carried the waters of the Foux and the Siagnole to the highest point of Fréjus (about 40 km). It is believed that the building was erected in the middle of the 1st century. The aqueduct has been listed as a historic monument since 1886.
